Personally signed by Marko Matijašević (creative concept) and Manuel Šumberac (illustrations). The most ambitious production by this publisher. ANOTHER GORGEOUS PRODUCTION BY AMARANTHINE BOOKS, LIMITED TO ONLY 200 UNITS Very Limited Availability – While Supplies Last Amaranthine Books 2023. Arthur Conan Doyle « Sherlock Holmes And The Adventures of a Dozen Favourites » Detective Edition. Signed Limited Artist Edition, limited to only 200 signed and numbered copies. Beautifully illustrated and bound in full genuine leather. Traycased. Very Fine, sealed without any flaws. A beautiful collectible piece of book art, featuring unique design elements. The Detective Edition of « Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of a Dozen Favourites » is limited to 200 signed and numbered copies, and it contains twelve short stories that were deemed favourite by the Arthur Conan Doyle himself. This edition comes in a solander case, featuring the title on the front part of the case as well as the title engraved in brown suede letter on the spine. Inside it is lined with beige plush, keeping the book well protected from the outside elements. The book is bound in the finest lambskin brown suede leather with a cutout in shape of Sherlock’s profile on the front cover, featuring a tartan fabric below, while the title of the book is engraved on the spine. Once you open the book, you’ll be met by handmade paste endpapers done by the legendary Freya Scott. They are inspired by the tartan pattern designed specially for this edition by Manuel Šumberac, who has also illustrated all the artwork, including the drop caps, for this title. The illustrations for this edition are truly remarkable, something that we have never done before. Since this is a short story collection, it made no sense to look for key plot points; instead the idea was to boil down the whole story into a singular illustration, which offered a “blueprint” of the story expressed artistically. Each illustration contains the key elements of the story, which is intended to beckon the reader to return and give it another look to better understand the story. As you go through the chapters, you’ll see there are beautiful themed drop caps designed for each story, as well as the unique title for each of them. Once you need a break from reading, you can use the bookmark shaped like a magnifying glass, but is fully functional as well, because it has a plastic lens with 3x magnification. Production and Materials This edition features many unique design elements to achieve the quintessential numbered edition of Sherlock Holmes short story collection. The solander case is draped in premium book cloth and has numerous special design details. It is lined with rich plush from the inside and features blind and gold blocking on the front and brown suede leather on the spine of the case. The book is bound in finest brown lambskin suede leather, sourced from Didier Lieutard in France, which was then laser cut on the front to feature Sherlock’s profile. This was done with goal to reveal the fabric featuring a tartan pattern below, giving the famous detective his distinctive look in a new way. To keep the spine interesting, laser engraving was used to form the title. Marbled endpapers were handmade using two sets of colours to achieve a delightful pattern. . The book is printed letterpress with our very own Heidelberg Cylinder SBG on Hahnemühle 100% cotton paper (140g), which is made specifically for us in this weight. The paper has a luxurious texture and works extremely well when used for letterpress printing, which gives it a little bit of a so-called “bite”. All twelve illustrations featured inside are printed offset. Finally, the book was smyth sewn, then glued afterwards to provide for maximum durability. For this title Baskerville typography seemed like the perfect choice. The magnifying glass bookmark is produced by caching a plastic magnifying lens between two Fedrigoni Savile Row papers, creating a functional bookmark. All of these details make this numbered edition of Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of a Dozen Favourites truly special. About Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based « consulting detective », Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skilful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887 and Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, respectively. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1875 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes’ friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two are narrated by Holmes himself and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (« The Musgrave Ritual » and « The Adventure of the Gloria Scott »), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle was a prolific writer; other than Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle’s early short stories, « J. Habakuk Jephson’s Statement » (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the Mary Celeste. Literary career Doyle struggled to find a publisher. His first work featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, A Study in Scarlet, was written in three weeks when he was 27 and was accepted for publication by Ward Lock & Co on 20 November 1886, which gave Doyle £25 (equivalent to £2,900 in 2019) in exchange for all rights to the story. The piece appeared a year later in the Beeton’s Christmas Annual and received good reviews in The Scotsman and the Glasgow Herald. Holmes was partially modelled on Doyle’s former university teacher Joseph Bell. In 1892, in a letter to Bell, Doyle wrote, « It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes … round the centre of deduction and inference and observation which I have heard you inculcate I have tried to build up a man »,[36] and in his 1924 autobiography, he remarked, « It is no wonder that after the study of such a character [viz., Bell] I used and amplified his methods when in later life I tried to build up a scientific detective who solved cases on his own merits and not through the folly of the criminal. » Robert Louis Stevenson was able to recognise the strong similarity between Joseph Bell and Sherlock Holmes: « My compliments on your very ingenious and very interesting adventures of Sherlock Holmes. … can this be my old friend Joe Bell? » Other authors sometimes suggest additional influences—for instance, Edgar Allan Poe’s character C. Auguste Dupin, who is mentioned, disparagingly, by Holmes in A Study in Scarlet. Dr. (John) Watson owes his surname, but not any other obvious characteristic, to a Portsmouth medical colleague of Doyle’s, Dr. James Watson. A sequel to A Study in Scarlet was commissioned, and The Sign of the Four appeared in Lippincott’s Magazine in February 1890, under agreement with the Ward Lock company. Doyle felt grievously exploited by Ward Lock as an author new to the publishing world, and so, after this, he left them.[9] Short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes were published in the Strand Magazine. Doyle wrote the first five Holmes short stories from his office at 2 Upper Wimpole Street (then known as Devonshire Place), which is now marked by a memorial plaque. Doyle’s attitude towards his most famous creation was ambivalent.[40] In November 1891, he wrote to his mother: « I think of slaying Holmes, … and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things. » His mother responded, « You won’t! You can’t! You mustn’t! »[42] In an attempt to deflect publishers’ demands for more Holmes stories, he raised his price to a level intended to discourage them, but found they were willing to pay even the large sums he asked.[40] As a result, he became one of the best-paid authors of his time. In December 1893, to dedicate more of his time to his historical novels, Doyle had Holmes and Professor Moriarty plunge to their deaths together down the Reichenbach Falls in the story « The Final Problem ». Public outcry, however, led him to feature Holmes in 1901 in the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. Holmes’s fictional connection with the Reichenbach Falls is celebrated in the nearby town of Meiringen. In 1903, Doyle published his first Holmes short story in ten years, « The Adventure of the Empty House », in which it was explained that only Moriarty had fallen, but since Holmes had other dangerous enemies—especially Colonel Sebastian Moran—he had arranged to make it look as if he too were dead. Holmes was ultimately featured in a total of 56 short stories—the last published in 1927—and four novels by Doyle, and has since appeared in many novels and stories by other authors. That is why we never want to make books that just look pretty; we want you to have an unparalleled reading experience. Finally, the end product has to feel as a whole, from the pages and the illustrations inside, to the covers and the box for the book. As a bonus, we always try to sneak in a few surprises inside the book for the more inquisitive readers to find. WHY AMARANTHINE? am·a·ran·thineadjective1. of or like the amaranth2. unfading; everlasting; eternally beautiful3. of purplish-red color Our books are not only made to look good, but to last as well. That is not only why we chose this particular name, but where we also picked the colour of our logo. FINE PRESS PUBLISHING Creation of our books often utilises premium materials, handmade details and a lot of manual labour. The end result is a gorgeous, meticulously produced book. However, this approach cannot always guarantee that everything will be absolutely perfect, simply because human beings and natural materials are not perfect either. Therefore, we consider these minor imperfections as a part of the charm of a handmade product. It represents the fact that a real person has had your book in their hands and did their work. Obviously, this does not concern serious defects that might occur in production and we tend to remedy those to the best of our ability. However, if you find these minor imperfections unacceptable, it might be good to reconsider the purchase of books such as these. You can always return the book if it’s not to your liking, but it is worthwhile keeping in mind how our books are produced prior to making the decision. Therefore we encourage you to read the production segments below where we tried to explain certain elements of our production, so you can get a clearer idea about the amount of work that go into our books. LEATHER COVERS Some of our books feature leather covers. We always aim to pick the leather of highest quality; one that we can put our logo on with pride. It is important to keep in mind that leather is a natural material first and foremost. Therefore, it can have certain markings and scars, which are a result of an animal’s natural experiences during its lifetime. Although we try to avoid using areas with such markings, sometimes it is unavoidable that these naturally occurring scars will find their way onto covers of our books. Since this is the natural state of things, we do not consider these subtle markings a defect, but rather an “imperfectly perfect” natural material, that is beautiful just the way it is. GILDED PAGE EDGES Our gilded page edges are not done by an automated machine, but rather by a person operating a manual machine. Therefore, small blemishes might occur on the gilding, purely because each book has gone through the hands of a master of his craft. Although we try to avoid any of them happening at all, it is quite impossible to completely avoid them. Therefore, we see them as having a charm of a handmade product. It represents the fact that a real person, a craftsman, has had your book in their hands. MARBLED ENDPAPERS Some of our books feature marbled endpapers, typically with a motif that was inspired by some element of the story. Each paper is made by hand by a master of their craft, using the best pigments at their disposal to create rich and unique patterns. That means that no two marbled papers are quite the same, because it would be quite impossible to even attempt to make them in such a way. Instead, they should be seen such as they are: a small works of art, each one completely unique, adding to the overall creative concept of the book. In some cases the ink might even transfer to the other side of the paper during drying, which for some books we tend to leave as is (instead of opting to make so-called “made papers”). We see this as some way of the artist’s “signature” and a proof of the handmade process. HANDWRITTEN TITLE Our lettered editions feature a title written by hand, often in shimmering ink that fits the story and our creative concept. These titles are written in before sewing and binding, and they go through a process of drying and sealing, as to minimise the chance of smearing. Each of these titles is unique due to the nature of the ink and the calligraphy involved in writing them.
