Les qualités humaines du roman séduisirent rapidement le public et en feront sa célébrité. Résumé Première partie Le narrateur ( lHomme de qualité des Mémoires ) qui sappelle Renoncour revient de Rouen. Il arrive pour dîner à Pacy-sur-Eure. Il règne dans la ville une grande agitation. Les habitants sont regroupés devant le cabaret oÙ se sont arrêtés deux chariots. Il sagit dun convoi dune douzaine de filles de mauvaise vie, condamnées à sembarquer pour lAmérique. Lune delles, Manon, lintrigue par sa beauté et sa distinction. Lauteur interroge donc le chef des gardes à son sujet, mais nobtient pas de réponse. À sa demande, un archer invite lhomme à questionner un jeune homme qui se tient à lécart et qui ne peut être que son frère ou son amant . Ce dernier qui a suivi le convoi depuis Paris semble souffrant. Il refuse de livrer son secret et lidentité de la jeune fille, mais avoue sa passion pour celle-ci et quil a tout essayé pour la faire libérer, au point dêtre à présent ruiné. Le narrateur, ému, paie alors le chef des gardes pour que le jeune homme puisse parler à sa guise avec Manon et donne une petite somme dargent à linconnu. Deux années sécoulent. LHomme de qualité revient de Londres et compte séjourner un jour et une nuit à Calais. En se promenant dans la ville, il croit reconnaître le même jeune homme que celui rencontré deux ans auparavant. Il laborde donc. Les deux hommes ont plaisir à se retrouver. Heureux de cette rencontre et remerciant encore le narrateur pour ses dons, le jeune homme précise quil rentre dAmérique. Le soir même, le narrateur accueille le jeune homme à lhôtel du Lion dOr oÙ il séjourne. Le mystérieux jeune homme commence le récit de ses aventures. La rencontre de Des Grieux et Manon Lescaut. Des Grieux, jeune homme de dix-sept ans, est issu dune bonne famille. Il sest montré un élève exemplaire au collège dAmiens et son père souhaitait quil devînt chevalier de lordre de Malte, doÙ son titre de noblesse. Tiberge, son meilleur ami, est généreux et compréhensif. De retour dans sa ville natale à la veille des vacances, Des Grieux rencontre dans une auberge oÙ il fait escale Manon Lescaut dont il tombe éperdument amoureux. Malgré sa jeunesse et son manque dexpérience amoureuse, il est fasciné par elle. Cest le coup de foudre. Des Grieux apprend que Manon est envoyée par ses parents au couvent. Quand ils se retrouvent seuls, elle lui avoue très vite quelle est flattée davoir fait la conquête dun amant tel que lui. La fuite étant lunique solution pour que Manon échappe à lavenir qui lui est destiné et quils puissent vivre leur amour, ils se donnent rendez-vous le lendemain à lauberge de Manon, avant le réveil du conducteur de carrosse. Malgré les efforts de Tiberge pour le détourner de son projet, Des Grieux est décidé à senfuir avec Manon. Il parvient à rassurer son ami et à estomper sa vigilance.
