Newbery (3 Victories, 2 Probable, 4 damaged and 8 V-1s Shot Down with 2 Shared) 610 Squadron RAF Exeter, Devon, England, Spring 1944 USED: Opened item, Plane is complete (no missing parts). The cockpit door has a broken hinge, but it stays in place and can be secured with a little Elmers Glue All or Microscale Crystal Clear. Both of these glue will not damage the modle like superglue and can be removed with water. Rear tail wheel is attached on the model. Box has shelf wear and a tear on the top tab (bottom L/H corner) small tear on the bottom tab (top R/H corner). In 1941, the Spitfire Mk.IV was the first Spitfire to be trialed with the new Rolls Royce Griffon engine. By the time the Griffon Spitfire entered service with the RAF in February 1943, subsequent modifications had redesignated the aircraft as the Spitfire Mk.XII. Although successful at low altitudes, the Mk.XII’s performance was actually inferior to the Merlin engine Mk.IX at medium and high altitudes. The Spitfire Mk.XIV was introduced as an interim fix to correct these performance issues. Fitted with a Rolls Royce Griffon 65 engine with a two-stage supercharger producing 2050 hp, the Mk.XIV immediately addressed many of the performance shortcomings suffered by the Mk.XII. The fuselage was strengthened to harness the powerful engine, and a five-bladed Rotol propeller replaced the earlier four-bladed examples. Early models were equipped with the Type C wing, while later Mk.XIVs were fitted with the Type E wing housing two 20 mm Hispano cannons and two .50 cal Browning machine guns, or four 20 mm cannons, alongside a high-visibility teardrop canopy. A common modification to the Mk.XIV was the clipped wing, which increased roll rate and marginally improved speed at the cost of the rate of climb. The Spitfire Mk.XIV entered service with Nos. 91, 322, and 610 Squadrons in southeast England, where it demonstrated notable success as an interceptor against V-1 Flying Bombs and as part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force in operations over occupied Europe. Although Spitfire Mk.XIVs were also planned for use in the Far East, a number of airframes were shipped to Burma, but none became operational before the end of the war. The Spitfire Mk.XIV received mixed reviews from its pilots; while there was no doubt of the significant performance increase the new variant offered, it was uncomfortable to fly and lacked the balance and control harmonization of earlier Merlin engine Spitfires. Just under 1,000 Spitfire Mk.XIVs were produced, with exports being employed by the Air Forces of India, Belgium, and Thailand. The Mk.XIV was the most successful of all the variants at destroying V-1 flying bombs, accounting for 300 kills. In October 1944, a Mk.XIV had the distinction of being the first to destroy a jet-powered Messerschmitt Me 262. Squadron Leader Richard A. Newbury D.F.C. and BarRichard Alfred Newbery, RAF Number 60104, enlisted in the RAFVR in May 1940 and was commissioned as a Leading Aircraftman (LAC) in January 1941 after completing his flying training. Following his training at the Operational Training Unit (OTU), he joined 501 Squadron in March 1941, and a year later, in March 1942, he was posted to 118 Squadron as a flight commander. He was awarded a DFC, Gazetted on the 23rd of June 1942, and received a Bar to this on the 4th of June 1943. After being promoted to Squadron Leader, Richard Alfred Newbury D.F.C. and Bar took over command of No. 610 (‘County of Chester’) Squadron in January 1944 and remained in command until February 1945. During his time as the squadron’s commanding officer, the squadron was heavily involved in anti-diver patrols against V-1 flying bombs. Squadron Leader Newbury shot down 8 ‘Doodlebugs’. His ‘personal’ aircraft during his time with No. 610 Squadron was a Supermarine Spitfire Mk. XIV, with serial number RB159, and carried the code DW-D. At the end of the war, he had 3 destroyed, 2 probable, 3 and 1 shared damaged enemy aircraft, and also destroyed 8 and 2 shared V1 bombs.
